The Town of Benton is located in the northern part of Yates County in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The Town of Benton which is approximately 44.4 square miles of which 93.4% is land and 6.6% is water. Based on the 2010 census, there were 2,836 residents in the Township.

The Town of Benton is primarily agricultural in nature with integrated residential housing and small businesses dispersed among the various farms. There are many Mennonite farms and businesses located in the Town of Benton.

While the original Township was created in 1803 and went through various name changes, it was finally named after Levi Benton who is thought to be one of the first settlers in the Town. In 1818 the Township was reduced when the Town of Milo was split off and reduced in size again in 1851 when the Town of Torrey was split out.
